RENEWING THE STEPS

JULY 17th 2005

November 04 November 04 December 04 December 04

Above are Malcolm Lee's pictures tracking progress of the old steps decline. Below are the pictures of the work being done to repair them. A good team turned out with two mixers, two wheelbarrows, lots of buckets and lots of hard work the steps have been repaired and are open again, so that people can use the quay and the new Frank McNichol bridge.

This page contains a list of tasks that the Main Conservation Group will need to undertake, at least on an annual basis.

In addition, we maintain the following prioritized lists of what we're working on this week, and what we plan to do next week:

General Maintenance

  1. The Bridge. This might  need to be inspected and painted once a year.

wpe1.jpg (14804 bytes)

2.   Any rock-falls will need to be cleared, and regular inspections for overhanging rocks will need to be made.

Flora and Fauna

  1. Ragwort is a plant which is poisonous to many animals. Every year we will need to go round The Main and collect any of these plants. They will need to be pulled up by the roots, put in bin bags and burnt. Click on the photo below for more information and the one below that for leaflets about how ragwort affects horses.

  1. The blackthorn, beautiful though it is, can take over the whole of the area. Every year we will need to cut this back. A number of farmers have offered to use their tractors with special spiky things to cut it back to managable levels.

Fundraising

This will be a lot of work but also a lot of fun. Any ideas are welcome.
